THIMBLE AND NUTMEG GRATER.
39,
Warwick Road, Redhill
Formerly a beer retailer's
shop in Warwick Road, its licence was refused in 1909.
Deeds: 31 July 1891, Lease
from W Whitmore and another to Mellersh & Neale. Rent £30 per annum, for 21
years from 24 June 1891. (Lease due to expire in 1912 but licence refused in
1909 and compensation paid to trustees).
It seems likely that the name is taken from the short story or novella, "The
Battle of Life", by Charles Dickens. In the story there is an episode in which
the inscription engraved around a thimble and nutmeg grater are quoted; the
thimble is inscribed with the words "Forget and forgive", and the nutmeg grater:
"Do as you would be done by".
